Melanie has specialized training and experience in the following modalities:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT aims to help people build a life worth living. For treatment with DBT to be considered comprehensive, it needs to include all four of these modes of treatment, including:
-Individual therapy
-Skills groups
-Phone coaching
-Consultation therapist team meetings

DBT Informed Treatment
Another choice that works for some people is to obtain DBT-informed treatment. This approach adapts the DBT structure based on a person’s particular goal or area of focus in therapy.  This approach doesn’t include the four components of comprehensive DBT.
*For those with more severe symptoms and life threatening behaviors, comprehensive DBT is often the most effective approach to treatment

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

When we experience distressing feeling, emotions and thoughts it is common for humans to want avoid and escape them.  Afterall, who really wants to let themselves sit with uncomfortable, overwhelming and intense emotions?

ACT teaches us through various skills how to tolerate and develop acceptance of these feelings, emotions and thoughts.  Acceptance, mindfulness, values and behavioral change are key components of ACT and foster what is called psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility is the ability to live in the present moment and to adapt to changes and difficult life events. ACT is empirically based and has shown to be effective with several clinical conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a psychological treatment that has the most robust research showing its effectiveness with a variety of clinical concerns related to anxiety, anger, depression, perinatal and post-partum mood disorders and PTSD.  CBT looks at how your thoughts, emotions, feelings, and behavior are all interconnected and influence one another. In CBT clients are encouraged to be in the driver seat by learning skills to manage your thoughts, emotions and behaviors in a more healthy and adaptive way that improves your mental health and overall wellness.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) explores emotions and how they are experienced from a functional aspect. It delves into how emotions influence your thoughts, behaviours, and relational style, meaning, how secure (or insecure) you feel in your relationships. In our time together, I will take a non-judgmental and compassionate approach with the goal of supporting you in developing a richer understanding of your emotions. Together, we will reshape how you interact with others so you feel safer, more secure, and happier.

“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.”
